RUST IN THE WIND
For over a year, whenever I could and wherever I was, I collected every rusted nail, tube or net I could find so that I could translate the look and feel of rust directly onto my fabric. In this mode, every car repair shop became an attraction, every neglected backyard became a must see. Utilizing all of this information, I placed the fabric in a special solution that had metal particles cling to the material at times even perforating it. The process entails working in a high temperature and on our part a lot a patience so that we don't affect the oxidation process and the delicate dialog between the material and the metal. Truth be told I wasn't always able withstand the temptation to enable this dialog.
משך שנה אספתי כל מסמר חלוד /פלטות /צינורות/ ורשתות במטרה להעביר את הטקסטורה והגוונים אל הבד באופן ישיר. כל מוסך הוא אטרקציה, וכל חצר מוזנחת היא יעד חשוב. בתהליך של ימים- שוכב הבגד בתמיסה מיוחדת ןמקבל אליו את גרגירי המתכת, שנצמדים וצובעים אותו- ולעיתים אף מחוררים אותו. זהו תהליך שדורש חום גבוה וסבלנות, כדי לא לפגוע בתהליך החימצון ויחסי הקירבה שנרקמים בין המתכת לחולצה. מודה שלא תמיד עמדתי בפיתוי.
what type r u?
Typography is the means by which text is organized and designed. Like every field of design it necessitates decision making and choices regarding fonts, type size, spacing etc. The art of placing a two dimensional object such as text on a three dimensional object such as a t-shirt creates a fourth dimension in the contextual and material aspects (after all text and textile always shared the same room..). Silkscreen, laser etching and heat embossing are just some of the techniques we used that enable endless and fascinating possibilities in pushing the original garment to a new result.
טיפוגרפיה היא הטכניקה של סידור ועיצוב טקסט. כמו כל תחום בעיצוב היא דורשת קבלת החלטות ובחירות כמו סוג פונט, גודל אות, אורך שורה, ריווח וכו׳. היכולת לשלב אלמנט דו מימד על אוביקט תלת מימדי כמו טי-שרט, יוצרת ערך שלישי- הן בהיבט המסר והן בהיבט החומר (אחרי הכל טקסט וטקסטיל תמיד חלקו יחד חדר). דפוס משי, טכניקת צריבה בלייזר או הטבעות בחום - מרתקים ומאפשרים אינסוף קומבינציות על בסיס חומר הגלם המקורי.
no time to dye
Tie Dye or batique as it is commonly known is a dying technique that is done on a finished garment as it is folded, dipped, tied and pigments are added as well as depleted in heat induced techniques. A fair measure of foolhardiness is elicited when one dips a perfectly good white shirt or white tailored jacket into tubs full of adventurous pigments who have a life of their own. Most of the time the end result can't be anticipated and occurs independently of what I would like, so I have learned to live with fear and have become addicted to the randomness of the process. At times the composition is successful on the first try at times I will made a second attempt as I try to control the uncontrollable. Part of the beauty in tie dye is creating a collection in which each garment is unique and one of a kind yet manages to make the collection cohesive. At the end of the day I love them all.
״טאי אנד דאי״ או באטיק היא טכניקת צביעה הנעשית על הבגד השלם- תוך כדי קיפול, טבילה, קשירה הוספה והחסרה של צבע בתהילכים כימיים בחום, נדרשת מידה רבה של הרפתקנות וחוסר אחריות לטבול חולצות לבנות וג׳קטים מחוייטים חדשים במיכלים מלאים פיגמנטים שלעיתים לוקחים החלטות באופן עצמאי, מה גם שהתוצאה הסופית מתבררת רק לאחר שהבגד מתייבש.
מודה שאיבדתי את הפחד, והתמכרתי לאקראיות שהיא חלק מובנה בתתהליך. לעיתים מצליחה קומפוזיציה בטבילה ראשונה- ולעיתים תוך כדי נסיון לתקן, או אי יכולת לעצור- נדרשת עבודה ממושכת על טי שרט בודדת.
חלק מהרעיון הוא לצור סדרה שיש בה שונות בין הפרטים- כל בגד הוא one of a kind - וכולם היו בניי.
black eggs
For decades Plisse Art been creating skirts for the pious girls and women of Beni Brak. As a traditional enterprise the product is always created in the same pattern and always in the same blue, grey and black fabrics. Plisse, is a 19th century technique that uses heat as a means to fixate pleats in the material and create accordion like patterns. The technique is fixed, what changes is that we rediscover this method from time to time and wonder over the sheer magic of creating structure and new usage in what was previously a flat fabric. For me, plisse offered a new opportunity to fall in love with people and methods that have always existed a short distance from where I create.
כבר עשרות שנים שמכינים ב"פליס ארט" - חצאיות עבור בנות צנועות מבני ברק. אותה גיזרה, אותה דוגמא אותם צבעים: כחול, אפור, שחור. הטכניקה מהמאה ה-19 מבוססת על קיבוע בחום של קפלים ויצירת מעין אקורדיון בתבניות שונות. הטכניקה קבועה - זה רק אנחנו שמגלים אותה מדי זמן, ומתפלאים על הקסם והיכולת לייצר מבנה ושימוש חדש לבד השטוח. בשבילי, זוהי הזדמנות נוספת להתפעל ממקום ומאנשים שלא שלא הכרתי אי שם בדרום העיר.
i will knot
Chiburui is a traditional Japaneese technique whereby knots and tied sections in the fabric creates a pattern of varying colors and shades along the fabric. This particular technique enables a wide variety of results and colors thanks to the randomness. As is often the case, with my learning curve of the Chiburui technique, I rapidly found it to be unsatisfying so I found myself challenging the technique to obtain unusual results, this of course left me anxious to see the final result. The final effect reveals itself only when all knots are untied and the material is totally dry. At times I find that the back side of the fabric is the one that captures my heart.
שיבורי היא טכניקה יפנית מסורתית, אשר בה קשירות וחסימות הבד על ידי חוט או חפצים אטומים יוצרים דוגמה שחוזרת על עצמה בעומקים ובגוונים שונים לאורך הבד. השיטה מיושמת בוריאציות שונות וצבעים שונים. למדתי עוד טכניקה- אבל מיד גיליתי חוסר משמעת. היציאה מהתבנית הקבועה- משאירה אותי בכל פעם מתוחה לגבי המראה הסופי- שמתגלה רק לאחר פתיחת הקשרים. לעיתים דוקא גב הבגד מוצלח יותר- ואז מומלץ ללכת רק אחורה !
